about our club

Reading Joggers is a small and friendly running club, formed in 1977 during the early years of the jogging boom. We have about 80 active members ranging in age from 18 to 80.

We meet from 7 pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Meadway Sports Centre in Conwy Close, Tilehurst, Reading, RG30 4NP. We aim to leave for our runs about 7:15 pm. During the summer months, the club organises a series of Thursday Handicap Races, and for these we meet in the central Car Park in Prospect Park, via the Liebenrood Road entrance. For details, click on the “Handicaps” tab. After the run we go to the Mansion House, also in Prospect Park, for our social and well earned refreshment.

Look around our website, or just come along to the Meadway Sports Centre on a Tuesday or Thursday evening (except the Thursday Handicaps) where a warm welcome awaits you.

Our runs last about 45 - 60 minutes and cover from 4 to 7 miles. There are several running groups to choose from and each group runs at a different pace, from ~10 min/mile for the slowest to about ~6 min/mile for the fastest. We can also arrange for an additional slower group if required so there is ample choice for runners and joggers of all abilities. We use a dozen or more well-tried routes around Tilehurst, often on woodland trails during the lighter summer evenings, but choose the local well-lit pavements during the winter. Throughout the year, we offer pleasant running to anyone who prefers not to train alone.

Each group has a leader appointed by the Club Captain, or his deputy, to show the way around the route. The group leader will also try to find an experienced runner to stay with anyone lagging behind, and deal with any minor incidents that may happen, but it must be stressed that runners take part at their own risk.

img\thumbnails\roundreadingrelay060tn.jpgRunning keeps you fit, but there's no pressure from us to improve! It's sheer enjoyment that keeps us going! However we have summer and winter handicaps where we try ourselves out over a regular course and a consistency league for those who do wish to improve and for those that do we have a qualified UKA coach who runs coaching sessions and can offer guidance.

Our runners often enter events, both local to Reading and further afield, from fun runs to marathons. Some members take part in Cross-country adventure races such as the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon.

The club is affiliated to  England Athletics, so your annual subscription (currently £15 of which £5 goes to England Athletics Registration) offers reduced cost of entry to many running events.
